The Concept
May 2023
Inspired by the Japanese low bench, this design honors the "Ma" or negative space found below the eye level. By keeping the silhouette grounded, it emphasizes the openness of a room. The piece features a modular inlay system, using the contrast between solid oak and stone to create a quiet, adaptable anchor for minimalist interiors.
The Craft
CNC, Hand craft, Laser Engraving
The fabrication prioritizes a seamless, continuous form. Using solid white oak, we employed waterfall joinery to wrap the grain uninterrupted around mitered edges. The central recess is precision-milled to house a flush-mounted marble slab, which is designed to be easily swappable with different stones or materials to evolve with the space.
The Perspective
Calm
This design is an intentional shift in focus, valuing the empty space above the furniture to create a sense of calm. Through its interchangeable material inserts, the bench moves beyond a static object into a versatile platform—balancing traditional Eastern spatial values with a modern, customizable approach to fabrication.

The Process
3.13.2Every project begins with material curation. For the low bench, we explored the dialogue between the warm, linear grain of European Oak and the cool, erratic veining of natural marble. By testing different stone and timber combinations, we ensure that the final piece maintains a balanced, minimalist presence while offering the flexibility of a modular surface.
